5th Grade: Students will explore the art of Victorian Architecture and how it came about after the Industrial Revolution. Students will design a house or building using the Victorian architecture style, and will also experiment with color-mixing tints and shades. Students will then study the art of Georgia O’Keeffe and create and extreme close-up drawing to be carved into a printing plate. Students will practice reductive printmaking to apply several layers of ink.
For our first project in Unit 1: Art is a Language, fifth graders will be studying the art of illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages. Students will explore the value of illuminated manuscripts in books in the past, and discover how letter-art has developed and changed throughout the ages to become modern-day logos. Students will use the elements and principles of art to create their own "logos". We will use a variety of media from colored pencils to watercolor paints. During the first couple weeks of school all students will become familiar with the art room rules and expectations. We will discuss and practice procedures in the art room so we can maximize our learning time throughout the year. Students will also be making their very own sketchbooks which they will use almost every day in art for taking notes, sketching ideas, practicing skills, and many more fun activities! Sketchbooks are important for artists to record their thoughts and ideas, and our sketchbooks will become a very special profile of the year's art learning! Our first project in Unit 3 will explore the medium of ceramic sculpture. Fifth graders will discuss the Atlanta artist, Kimmy Cantrell and how he creates his well-known expressionistic portrait sculptures. Students will explore the use of emotion and expression through art, and how this can be accomplished in a 3D medium. Students will apply different clay handbuilding techniques, such as slab, coil, and pinch to create their own expressionist sculptures. We will introduce a new oil pastel resist technique to add color to complete our compositions For our first project in Unit 2 students will be reintroduced to styrofoam plate printmaking, while adding the element of reduction. Students will explore the life and artwork of well-known artist Georgia O'Keeffe, and take inspiration from her many paintings. Students will design their own flower or plant in the enlarged style of O'Keeffe to carve into their printing plates. Students will use learned printmaking methods to create a series of prints, will carefully reducing the printing plate each time to vary the result. Students will make informed artistic decisions about how to complete their compositions for display. For our second project in Unit 1 students will study American artist realist artist, Edward Hopper. Students will critique Hopper's artistic style and analyze the emotions expressed throught his paintings, particularly "The House by the Railroad". Students will use this style along with elements of Victorian architecture to create a detailed line drawing of a "haunted house". For the background, students will learn how to create a monochromatic color scheme using tempera paints. For our first project in Unit 1 5th graders will be creating their own "logos" taking inspiration from Illuminated Manuscripts of the Middle ages. Students will discuss the origin of the illuminated manuscripts in the world's first written books, the use of symbols in art, and the importance of art as its own form of language. Students will apply learned drawing, coloring, and painting techniques, as well as demonstrate creativity and craftsmanship. **IMPORTANT**: This artwork will be used for the Square 1 Art Fundraiser this year, which is due October 4th. So, if your child is absent from Art before the due date PLEASE take advantage of Open Studio hours so that your child will have a piece for the fundraiser. During the first couple weeks of school all students will become familiar with the art room rules and expectations. Students will discuss the difference between nonfunctional art, such as drawings and paintings, and funtional art, such as a woven bag. Students will explore the style and use of weaving as a Native American craft as they learn key terms and skills to create their own loom, warp, and weft. Students will also apply knowledge of learned color schemes in choosing yarn for their weaving pattern. |
