4th Grade: Students will compare different styles of art, specifically looking at representational, abstract, and non-objective. We will study the art of Pop Artist Roy Lichtenstein and his still-life pieces. Students will draw and paint a still-life and will emphasize new color schemes. We will also create self-portrait printing plates for our printmaking unit.
For our first project in Unit 1: Art is a Language, fourth graders will be studying the spirit animals as a part of Native American art and culture. Students will discover the stories and meanings behind the Native American belief in the animal guides, and will explore their own characteristics to match themselves to a spirit animal. Using Native American totems and drawings and inspiration, students will create a mixed-media drawing of the animal they choose. During the first couple weeks of school all students will become familiar with the art room rules and expectations. We will discuss and practice procedures in the art room so we can maximize our learning time throughout the year. Students will also be making their very own sketchbooks which they will use almost every day in art for taking notes, sketching ideas, practicing skills, and many more fun activities! Sketchbooks are important for artists to record their thoughts and ideas, and our sketchbooks will become a very special profile of the year's art learning!
For our next project, fourth graders will be introduced to one-point perspective drawing technique. Students will explore the history of drawing and how perspective came about to give flat, 2-D artworks more depth and realism. Students will create a drawing of an aquarium using this perspective technique, where they will research what types of undersea animals could inhabit the space together. Students will use mixed media techniques such as drawing, painting, and collage to create a completed composition. For our first project in Unit 2 students will be introduced to a new form of printmaking using styrofoam printing plates. Students will first learn the balance and proportions of the human face to create a realistic self-portrait. Students will apply printmaking methods to print their portraits with ink, and then alter the image to make the portraits abstract. Students will make decisions about how to complete a composition to be ready for display. For our second project in Unit 1 students will practice direct observational drawing of a still-life. Students will study Roy Lichenstein and his American Pop Art style. Students will practice drawing 3-D forms from observation. We will discuss using different types of lines and colors to show expression in artwork. Students will create tints and shades using tempera paints to create color values. For our first project in Unit 1, fourth graders will be exploring the new method of Zentangle, created by Rick Roberts. Students will discuss the benefits of zentangle meditation and how skills like focus, concentration, and patience can transfer to other areas of life. Students will explore the elements and principles of art, and apply line, pattern, repetition, contrast, and emphasis to their artwork. Students will prepare artwork for exhibition in the Square 1 Art fundraiser. **IMPORTANT**: This artwork will be used for the Square 1 Art Fundraiser this year, which is due October 4th. So, if your child is absent from Art before the due date PLEASE take advantage of Open Studio hours so that your child will have a piece for the fundraiser. For our final project of Unit 4, fourth graders will explore the craft of Molas inspired by the Cuna tribes of South America. Students will study the importance of art as a form of self-expression for the women of these small island tribes. Students will evaluate the use of elements and principles of art in the mola designs. Students will use color schemes, variety of line and shape, and create an overall unity in the piece. Students will create their own Molas using collaging techniques. For our next project, fourth graders will be introduced to one-point perspective drawing technique.
