3rd Grade: Students will compare and contrast the artworks of Picasso and Matisse, and will use them as inspiration for a mixed-media piece. We will then study the art of collograph printmaking, and students will be challenged to create their own printing plates and series of prints.
For our first project in Unit 1: Art is a Language, third graders will be studying the creation of 3-Dimensional space in a flat artwork. Students will explore and discuss the artwork of Wayne Thiebaud, specifically his dessert paintings. Students will apply the techniques he uses to create the illusion of 3-D space, such as overlapping and using forms. Students will also use watercolor paints to create a variety of values in their colors. During the first couple weeks of school all students will become familiar with the art room rules and expectations. We will discuss and practice procedures in the art room so we can maximize our learning time throughout the year. Students will also be making their very own sketchbooks which they will use almost every day in art for taking notes, sketching ideas, practicing skills, and many more fun activities! Sketchbooks are important for artists to record their thoughts and ideas, and our sketchbooks will become a very special profile of the year's art learning! For our next project, 3rd graders will be exploring the medium of clay, specifically coil handbuilding. We will discuss the different uses of clay pots throughout history, focusing on the uses in Native American tribes. Students will compare and contrast utilitarian art and aesthetic art, as well as look at real-world examples. We will build our own coil pots, completing the piece with a coat of glaze. For our first project in Unit 2 students will be introduced to collograph printmaking. Students will build their own collograph printing plates using found objects. Students will use printmaking tools such as ink and brayers to create a series of prints. We will practice making artistic decisions to bring variety and harmony to a balanced composition. For our next project we will be study the artistic style of Pablo Picasso, and create an abstract animal drawing. Students will practice contour line drawing for the outline of they animal of their choice. We will discuss different color schemes, including how to create tints and shades using colored pencils and watercolor paints. Students will apply new knowledge of color value and color schemese to complete the composition.
For our next project, third graders will be exploring the world of color theory! Students will discuss several new color schemes using the color wheel, and will analyze how color theory can be used in other professions and in everyday life, besides just in the art room. Students will collaborate with one another to create a large artwork to be displayed with overlapping shapes. Students will apply color schemes to completed artwork. For our first project of Unit 1 3rd graders will be creating paintings of their favorite dessert! This project is inspired by well-known artist, Wayne Theibaud. We will discuss Theibaud's life and artistic style. Students will be introduced to different perspective techniques to make a flat drawing look like it has 3D space in it. Students will also apply color contrast theory, as well as drawing, painting, and craftsmanship skills . **IMPORTANT**: This artwork will be used for the Square 1 Art Fundraiser this year, which is due October 4th. So, if your child is absent from Art before the due date PLEASE take advantage of Open Studio hours so that your child will have a piece for the fundraiser. Students will discuss the importance of weaving throughout history, and explore it's many functions. Students will review knowledge of color schemes, patterns, and radial symmetry before applying to weave. Students will warp their own looms and weave using a tabby pattern. To complete their compositions, students will make artistic decision about the |
