Kindergarten: Students will begin the study of color, specifically how to mix colors to create new colors, and how to put them together to form compositions. We will use primary and secondary colors to create a pumpkin patch while learning the parts of the pumpkin. Kindergarteners will also be introduced to textures and patterns to complete their clay project.
For our first project in Unit 1: Art is a Language, kindergarteners will be introduced to the different types of lines in art. Students will practice drawing different types of lines in their sketchbooks before applying them creatively to their artwork. Students will practice drawing, cutting, and pasting different basic shapes together to create an animal. Students will get to explore different color schemes in their choices of paper and crayons. During the first couple weeks of school all students will become familiar with the art room rules and expectations. We will discuss and practice procedures in the art room so we can maximize our learning time throughout the year. Students will also be making their very own sketchbooks which they will use almost every day in art for taking notes, sketching ideas, practicing skills, and many more fun activities! Sketchbooks are important for artists to record their thoughts and ideas, and our sketchbooks will become a very special profile of the year's art learning! For our next Unit 2 project, Kindergarteners will be exploring perspective and space in 2-D art by creating a "Snowmen at Night" painting. Students will find inspiration from the children's story, "Snowmen at Night". Throughout the lesson, students will learn and apply knowledge of the horizon line, as well as size relation to distance in perspective. Students will be drawing, painting, and collaging for this project. For our first project in Unit 2, Kindergarteners will be working with clay. Students will learn ceramic art vocabulary and apply handbuilding techniques to create a fossil-inspired medallion. Students will discuss how fossils are created and where they come from. The radial design they use for their artwork will come specifically from fossils of sea anemones. Students will then have the opportunity to paint or glaze their bisqueware and add finishing details such as ribbon or yarn.
For our second project in Unit 1, Kindergarteners will learn how to create secondary colors by mixing primary colors together. We will begin the lesson by reading the story "Mouse Paint" about color-mixing. Students will use primary color paints to create their own secondary colors for their pumpkin patch collage. Students will apply knowledge of shapes and lines to create a pumpkin patch For our first project of Unit 1 Kindergarteners will be creating snail collages. We will take our inspiration from the children's story, "The Biggest House in the World". Students will be introduced to all the different types of lines used in art, as well as a bit of color theory. Students will practice their fine motor skills by cutting and pasting several different types of geometric shapes. Students will use drawing techniques for the details on the collage, while gaining an understanding of good craftsmanship and good work habits. **IMPORTANT**: This artwork will be used for the Square 1 Art Fundraiser this year, which is due October 4th. So, if your child is absent from Art before the due date PLEASE take advantage of Open Studio hours so that your child will have a piece for the fundraiser. Sketchbooks are important for artists to record their thoughts and ideas, and our sketchbooks will become a very special profile of the year's art learning For our final project of Unit 4, kindergarteners will take inspiration from the Kente Clothes of Ghana. Students will be introduced to weaving as a type of functional art form, and specifically explore Ghana's use of Kente Cloth. Students will use measuring techniques to create a paper loom. Students will apply knowledge of color schemes to choose a pattern for their weaving. To complete their composition, students will use different Ghana symbols to stamp onto their kente clothes. Kindergarteners will explore architecture and design through images of castles. Students will create their own castle drawing using details and ideas from studied castles as inspiration. Students will review color schemes to create a watercolor resist on the drawn castles. Students will also create a story about their castle with descriptions of where the castle is located, what kind of rooms it has, who lives in the castle, etc. |
