For our first project in Unit 3, fourth graders will be studying the artwork of Helen Cordero. Students will discuss the history of the Pueblo culture's storytellers, and how Cordero made this into an art form. Students will apply different clay handbuilding techniques, such as slab, coil, and pinch to create their own versions of the storyteller sculptures. Students will use knowledge of balance, texture, form, and color to create a complete composition.
For our first project in Unit 2 students will be introduced to a new form of printmaking using styrofoam printing plates. Students will first learn the balance and proportions of the human face to create a realistic self-portrait. Students will apply printmaking methods to print their portraits with ink, and then alter the image to make the portraits abstract. Students will make decisions about how to complete a composition to be ready for display. For our second project in Unit 1 students will practice direct observational drawing of a still-life. Students will study Roy Lichenstein and his American Pop Art style. Students will practice drawing 3-D forms from observation. We will discuss using different types of lines and colors to show expression in artwork. Students will create tints and shades using tempera paints to create color values. For our first project in Unit 1 4th graders will be creating realistic animal drawings, with inspiration from artist and illustrator Alex Beard. Students will discuss the difference between representational art and non-objective art. Students will use observational drawing for their animals while using imaginative creativity for the background. We will review and apply color theory, line variety, as well as craftsmanship techniques. **IMPORTANT**: This artwork will be used for the Square 1 Art Fundraiser this year, which is due October 4th. So, if your child is absent from Art before the due date PLEASE take advantage of Open Studio hours so that your child will have a piece for the fundraiser. During the first couple weeks of school all students will become familiar with the art room rules and expectations. We will discuss and practice procedures in the art room so we can maximize our learning time throughout the year. Students will also be making their very own sketchbooks which they will use almost every day in art for taking notes, sketching ideas, practicing skills, and many more fun activities! Sketchbooks are important for artists to record their thoughts and ideas, and our sketchbooks will become a very special profile of the year's art learning! |
