For our next project, second graders will be introduced to the ancient art of Aboriginal Dot Painting. Students will discover the stories behind the old cave paintings and discuss the meaning behind the symbols. Students will use Aborigine symbols, as well as create their own symbols to complete a dot painting about themselves in the Aborigine style. Students will include a writing component with their completed composition in the form of an artist statement explaining the meaning of their symbols.
For our first project in Unit 3, second graders will be introduced the medium of printmaking. We will specifically be studying the monoprint method. Students will compare and contrast the creation of art through printmaking versus other methods (drawing, painting, etc). Students will apply knowledge of the elements and principles of art, specifically color, texture, value, and harmony. Students will make thoughtful decisions about finishing details to have a completed composition. For our second project in Unit 2, students will be exploring the style of Folk Art. We will discuss the life and work of famous Folk Artist, "Mose T" as our inspiration. Students will be introduced to the use of perspective to show depth and distance in art. Students will apply these techniques to create a foreground, middleground, and background in their landscape drawings. We will also explore color theory and blending techniques with oil pastels. For our first project in Unit 2 students will create ceramic owl sculptures using clay handbuilding techniques with a focus on slab building. Students will explore the difference between 2-D art and 3-D art. Students will also discuss how to create actual textures and implied textures in art. We will read the story "The Little White Owl" as inspiration for our sculpture. Students will have the opportunity to glaze the bisqueware to complete the composition. For our second project in Unit 1 students will study French artist Henri Matisse, and use his collaging style as inspiration for their cut-paper collage. Students will learn the difference between geometric and organic shapes, re-apply knowledge of positive and negative space, and create an area of color emphasis as a focal point. For our first project of Unit 1 2nd graders will be creating silhouette paintings of birds inspired by Atlanta-based artist, Kara Walker. Students will view images of Walker's artwork and discuss their observations. Students will learn what a silhouette is and how it is created, as well as understand why using silhouettes in art can emphasize different elements of the piece. Students will also apply knowledge of color theory to make decisions in their artwork, while practicing good work habits and craftsmanship in their paintings. **IMPORTANT**: This artwork will be used for the Square 1 Art Fundraiser this year, which is due October 4th. So, if your child is absent from Art before the due date PLEASE take advantage of Open Studio hours so that your child will have a piece for the fundraiser. During the first couple weeks of school all students will become familiar with the art room rules and expectations. We will discuss and practice procedures in the art room so we can maximize our learning time throughout the year. Students will also be making their very own sketchbooks which they will use almost every day in art for taking notes, sketching ideas, practicing skills, and many more fun activities! Sketchbooks are important for artists to record their thoughts and ideas, and our sketchbooks will become a very special profile of the year's art learning! |
