2nd Grade: Students will continue their study of Folk Art and “Cornbread”. Next we will explore the art of collaging with a focus on the geometric and organic shapes like Henri Matisse. Students will explore the difference between actual and implied texture when they design and create their clay project.
For our first project in Unit 1: Art is a Language, second graders will be studying Aurora Borealis, or "The Northern Lights". Students will explore the cause of the lights over the north pole, and will discuss how this compares to the stars in their science unit. Students will be introduced to new color schemes, such as warm, cool, and neutral, and will apply these color schemes to their artwork. Students will complete their art using an oil pastel blending technique. During the first couple weeks of school all students will become familiar with the art room rules and expectations. We will discuss and practice procedures in the art room so we can maximize our learning time throughout the year. Students will also be making their very own sketchbooks which they will use almost every day in art for taking notes, sketching ideas, practicing skills, and many more fun activities! Sketchbooks are important for artists to record their thoughts and ideas, and our sketchbooks will become a very special profile of the year's art learning!
For our next project, 2nd graders will be exploring 3D art inspired by the sculptures of Dale Chihuly. Chihuly is a master glass sculptor who loves to experiment with color. Students will review and be introduced to several color schemes they'll have to choose from, including warm, cool, analogous, and complementary. They will design a color pattern, then watch how nature changes the art! Just as in glass sculpting, the air, heat, gravity, and humidity will play a big role in the final composition! For our next project students will study French artist Henri Matisse, and use his collaging style as inspiration for their cut-paper collage. Students will learn the difference between geometric and organic shapes, re-apply knowledge of positive and negative space, and create an area of color emphasis as a focal point. For our first project in Unit 2 students will create ceramic owl sculptures using clay handbuilding techniques with a focus on slab building. Students will explore the difference between 2-D art and 3-D art. Students will also discuss how to create actual textures and implied textures in art. We will read the story "The Little White Owl" as inspiration for our sculpture. Students will have the opportunity to glaze the bisqueware to complete the composition. For next project, students will be exploring the style of Folk Art. We will discuss the life and work of famous Folk Artist, "Grandma Moses" as our inspiration. Students will be introduced to the use of perspective to show depth and distance in art. Students will apply these techniques to create a foreground, middleground, and background in their landscape drawings. We will also explore color theory and blending techniques with oil pastels. For our first project of Unit 1 2nd graders will be creating silhouette paintings of birds inspired by Atlanta-based artist, Kara Walker. Students will view images of Walker's artwork and discuss their observations. Students will learn what a silhouette is and how it is created, as well as understand why using silhouettes in art can emphasize different elements of the piece. Students will also apply knowledge of color theory to make decisions in their artwork, while practicing good work habits and craftsmanship in their paintings. **IMPORTANT**: This artwork will be used for the Square 1 Art Fundraiser this year, which is due October 4th. So, if your child is absent from Art before the due date PLEASE take advantage of Open Studio hours so that your child will have a piece for the fundraiser. Sketchbooks are important for artists to record their thoughts and ideas, and our sketchbooks will become a very special profile of the year's art learning For our final project of Unit 4, second graders will explore the art of Spanish milagros, a type of metal etching art. Students will explore how milagros is an important form of art in the Spanish culture. To design their own milagros, students will be introduced to balanced symmetry. Students will brainstorm different things around them that have symmetry, and sketch out 2 or more of these designs. Students will create their milagros by tracing their designs into thin metal, and will complete their compositions by choosing a color scheme for their piece. |
