For our first project in Unit 4, first graders will be exploring the life and artwork of Pablo Picasso. We will discuss the different periods of Picasso's art, including his Blue Period, Rose Period, and Cubist period, with a focus on his abstract portraits. Students will compare and contrast realistic and abstract portraits before creating their own. Students will use self-portrait drawing techniques, and then take inspiration from Picasso's abstract portraits to distort the image. We will further explore color theory, including introduction of complementary color schemes to complete the composition.
Students will take inspiration from infamous artist Wassily Kandinsky and his passion for music and art for our next project. Students will explore Kandinsky techniques and his use of line and color to express emotions in his artwork. We will discuss Kandinsky's use of music as inspiration for his paintings. Students will listen to different types of classical music and interpret the emotion or feeling the music is portraying. Students will then try to create this emotion in their painting using expressive lines and colors. Finally, students will write an artist statement about their inspirations for their art. |
